Flat feet is one of the conditions that we see in children’s foot care very frequently. It takes a while for most children to develop their arches. Usually by age 6 is when you see them completely formed. If you are not sure whether or not your child has arches, you can try doing the “wet test.” Simply place his or her foot in some water and then firmly plant it on a piece of brown paper. If you can see the entire outline of the foot, including the mid-sole, your child probably still has flat feet. The non-development of arches doesn’t always cause problems, though. Your child can go through life without arches and never feel any pain at all. It’s only when the foot becomes rigid and painful that treatment should be considered. For information on treatment options for rigid flat feet, call Dr. Mitchell Wachtel at (978) 794-8406 to schedule a consultation in one of our conveniently located Massachusetts offices.
