Running is extremely healthy for you but can cause pain in the foot.  When people run long distances there can be burning and numbness type pain that typically will occur.

Burning can be a sign of friction in one spot causing either a callus or a blister,  If a runner goes too long on their feet, an infection or abscess may occur due to putting too much pressure on one area. Another possibility is that the patient is developing a neuroma, which is essentially a nerve that is pinched between 2 bones and typically is traumatized.

Lastly burning on the sole of the foot may be caused by metatarsalgia which either is a thinning of the fat pad on the bottom of the foot or inflammation on the bottom of the foot.

Any or all of these problems can be easily treated with evaluation for a custom orthotic.  Custom orthotics are shoe inserts that are made specifically for your unique foot. The orthotic controls all of the imbalances of the feet when landing.

Dr. Mitchell Wachtel, podiatrist in North Andover, sees and treats these foot issues on a regular basis. He will know what type of shoe gear you need and how to treat the pain and discomfort you may be feeling. Don’t let foot pain keep you from running – schedule your appointment today!
