Bunions are bumps found on the side of the big toe. They are a result of poor biomechanics (and sometimes shoes that fit too tightly in the toe area). Unfortunately, since genetics is to blame it means that even children can develop bunions. The goal of treating juvenile bunions is to prevent the progression of development. This can be done with orthotics, taping the bunion, wearing roomier shoes, and doing certain stretches. If your child is in severe discomfort or pain and none of the other treatment methods have worked you might consider having the bunion removed surgically. This is a last resort only used in rare and extreme cases.
