When we run, we develop increased friction on different parts of our feet and ankles due to repetitive motions. Increased friction will cause pressure on the skin, especially in bony areas.
The most common place to see a blister is on top of the toes, near the bunion area, and on the pad of the foot. Blisters on the feet is the body’s way of protecting itself.
Blisters are sterile abscesses, contained in their own bubble. Our frequent recommendation is to leave blisters intact and protect them with a gauze bandage with tape or a bandage. There are, however, certain circumstances under which you can take steps at home to relieve pain from a blister. For most people, however, over time, and with protection, the blisters will go away.
The best way to prevent blisters for runners is to wear thickly padded socks and extra wide sneakers that have expandable fabric on the top of the sneaker.Custom orthotics are a good way of controlling your foot mechanics to prevent too much pressure on one specific area. If you do get recurrent blisters, I recommend you get evaluated by a podiatrist because it could mean there is a problem with the mechanics of your foot and ankle.
