Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection that affects many people. It can cause an itchy rash on your foot and can spread to other parts of your body if not treated. Fungus thrives in moist, dark, and warm places such as the inside of your shoes or in a gym locker room. It is usually passed on from person to person in places where many feet have likely been. For this reason, it is a good idea to wear shower shoes when you will be in a public place like this. The fungus can also grow in your shoes if you neglect to keep them clean and dry. Your footwear needs at least 24 hours to completely dry out, so have an extra pair on hand to wear on alternate days. If your feet sweat a lot, change to another pair of socks half way through the day. Prevention is key to avoiding the discomfort of athlete’s foot, as it can be very difficult to treat. For more information on preventing and treating athlete’s foot call Dr. Mitchell Wachtel at (978) 794-8406 to schedule a consultation in our Haverhill, MA office.
