Claw and mallet toes are both deformities of the toe joints. They are typically the result of wearing shoes that are too tight, but can also be brought about by muscle or nerve damage. They are very similar in that both will affect the appearance of your toes, may cause pain or discomfort, and can make it difficult to find shoes that will fit. Both can also lead to corns and calluses on the toes that may become painful. However, they have some differences. Claw toes occur when the two end joints of a toe bend downwards and the first joint next to your foot bends upwards. Often all four smaller toes are affected. Mallet toes occur when just the last joint is constantly turned down, creating a bent toe that resembles a mallet.
