A bunion is a bony protrusion on the side of the big toe. Most of these bumps don’t require a bunionectomy, but instead can be treated with nonsurgical means. One of the easiest things you can do for that bump on the side of your foot is to change to a different shoe style. Sometimes that’s all you need to cause yourself less pain. Trying to cram a foot deformity into tight shoes can be very uncomfortable. You can wear protective padding on the bump to prevent it from rubbing up against the inside of your shoe. Certain orthotics or inserts may help as well. There are also stretches you can do, such as toe flexing and contracting, that will help strengthen the muscles in this area and ease any pain you might be feeling. However, in some cases surgery may become necessary. We can help you decide what treatment is right for you.
