Diabetes presents many problems for people, but one of the biggest concerns is foot health. Peripheral neuropathy (caused by damaged nerves) can cause you to be unable to feel sensation in your limbs, particularly your feet. This means that you could injure yourself and not even know it. Diabetic foot self-exams are important to do every day to spot injuries quickly.Start by washing your feet with lukewarm water (check the temperature with your wrist or elbow—not your hands) and patting them dry. Look at your foot from every angle and check in and around your toes. If you are unable to see your feet clearly, use a pocket mirror or enlist the help of a loved one. It’s important to keep track of your findings so you can tell if anything changes or is a cause for concern.
If you have more questions about how to perform a self-exam call Dr. Mitchell Wachtel, podiatrist North Andover, at (978) 794-8406 to schedule an appointment in one of our three Massachusetts offices.
