The Freedom Trail Run 5k is this Saturday June 28th in Boston. If you are a regular runner you probably know the difference that good running shoes can make. It’s a good idea to know how to choose good shoes for running because you don’t want to needlessly sustain an injury or suffer from a chronic foot condition.
There are a few rules you should follow when buying yourself a new pair:
- You should be able to slide your feet in and out fairly easily when your shoes are laced up but not tied. If you can’t, then they are probably too tight. If you can slide your feet out when they are tied, they are probably too loose. Make sure the fit is just right.
- Allow for some wiggle room, as feet tend to swell after a run.
- Make sure the footwear bends (or flexes) where your foot naturally does. Your arches could sustain an injury if they don’t line up correctly.
- Get your feet measured every time you go shopping for a new pair of shoes. Don’t assume your size, because many people’s feet change size and shape over time.
Remember, these are just guidelines. Everyone is different and has different needs. When you go to the shoe store, be prepared to spend a substantial amount of time trying on various shoes to find what works the best for you and your unique feet. If something doesn’t feel right, speak up! You don’t want to go home with a pair of running shoes that you can’t even run in because of discomfort.
