Spring training and baseball season are in full swing, and as any diehard fan knows, there are many types of baseball injuries that can put a player on the bench for a long time. If players injure their feet, they can be out for an entire season, but many of these problems are preventable.
One of the biggest issues athletes have to deal with is tendinitis. This is the inflammation of the Achilles tendon and can lead to a great deal of pain and discomfort. The main cause is overuse. When you don’t properly stretch your feet and legs before physical activity, it puts a lot of stress on the Achilles. If you are suffering from tendinitis you may notice that you have redness, swelling, and pain during activity.
When treating this condition, the most important thing to remember is to discontinue the activity that caused the problem. This might mean staying off your feet for a period of time. The RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) can be very helpful in easing the pain and swelling. We have had good results in many of our patients by prescribing custom-made orthotics or creating a stretching regimen for them. We can also recommend medications to help ease your pain.
