What is Freiberg’s disease?

Freiberg’s disease, or a Freiberg infraction, is a condition that causes pain in the ball of the foot. It is often found in teenagers, but can be seen in adults, as well. This condition causes the metatarsal heads to flatten out. Unfortunately, the cause is not known, but trauma and poorly fitting shoes are two theories.Symptoms include intense pain that makes even walking difficult. Some people experience stiffness and swelling. If you begin treatment early enough you can usually stick with conservative methods. Resting your feet and changing your shoes may be all that is needed. In more severe cases you may be required to completely immobilize your foot in a cast. Rarely surgery is needed, but it’s a possibility.
